The drivers pushing mining companies to seriously look at the EV transition encompass a broad range of benefits – reduced ventilation requirements (30-50% less) and associated energy costs, elimination of diesel fuel costs (tens of thousands of dollars per EV unit, per year), reduced maintenance costs (some 25% fewer parts on EV propulsion vs. diesel propulsion rigs), elimination of diesel fine particular matter in the underground environment, and last but definitely not least - less noise, vibration and heat for miners operating the equipment underground. So how do you quantify the operational savings?

The new 75-ton EC750E excavator from Volvo boasts significant improvements to power, productivity and efficiency compared to its predecessor. It is equipped with the Volvo D16J 516-horsepower (392 kW), Tier 4 Final engine, providing an 11 percent increase in horsepower and 7 percent increase in digging force. Its 5 percent gain in fuel efficiency enables higher production at a lower cost per ton. A 4 percent boost in hydraulic flow is made possible by its new electro-hydraulic control system that reduces loss of flow and pressure for increased production.

The Volvo A45G articulated hauler is designed to be both powerful and productive, while remaining incredibly nimble and efficient. The A45G — powered by the latest Volvo D16, Tier 4 Final engine — boasts 469 horsepower (350 kW) and is capable of 45-ton payloads. New improvements include the Volvo Dynamic Drive system, which provides an enhanced gear-shifting strategy that increases customer fuel efficiency by 3 to 10 percent. New standard safety features include Hill Assist and a dump support system.

Cipta Kridatama Talent Development Manager, Gemilang Adi Perdana, said “with commodity prices going down, like many sites, we are looking at ways to cut costs and fuel consumption was identified as problem area. We were over budget by nearly 10,000 liters per month at one site and identified the contributors affecting fuel consumption. Operator skill level was the focus of the fuel efficiency efforts,” Perdana said. Fuel records for 30 haul truck operators were collected over a one month period and 18 of the 30 were over the budgeted liters per hour consumption. All operators were assessed using an Immersive Technologies, Advanced Equipment Simulator to establish a baseline, simulation based training then occurred followed by a reassessment. Once operators passed the reassessment they were put back in the field. After one month operators were assessed again to confirm retention of the new haul truck operating techniques.

The mining sector throughout its history has been receiving pressure to increase production, with lower costs and with less environmental impacts. This pressure has been transferred to the OEMs to manufacture faster equipment, with more horse power, higher efficiencies, while generating lower emissions. This can be seen in the evolution of equipment that have become ever larger and more efficient. To meet this need the engines and transmissions need to produce/transmit increasing power and the hydraulic systems need to work with extremely high pressures, requiring that these components be designed with tighter clearances and therefore requiring lubricants and fuels with a high level of cleanliness. In order to meet the increasingly stringent emissions requirements, engines need to work with higher pressures and increasingly cleaner fuels. Year after year the contamination impact in the mining sector is becoming more critical due to: • New fuels technologies, such as ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) and biofuels • New legislation with greater emissions restrictions • New equipment technologies to improve energy efficiency, power and speed It is important to highlight the importance of fuel and lubricant cleanliness due to: • Higher pressure of fuel and hydraulic systems • Closer tolerances

The Robinson Nevada copper and gold mine is a big place, but it has no room for guesswork. Just ask Production Analyst Leatham Hendrix. Located in rugged White Pine County near Ruth, Nevada, the Robinson site—operated by Robinson Nevada Mining Company, a division of QuadraFNX Mining, Ltd.—employs 510 people and runs a large mixed fleet that includes 29 haul trucks of 150- and 240-ton capacities. That’s a lot of equipment and manpower for Hendrix to keep tabs on, and small data collection errors can add up quickly to big management problems. “It’s one thing to capture data manually,” Hendrix says, “but there’s always the question of the ‘human factor.’ Somebody puts the wrong number in the wrong place and everything looks different from that point on.” To minimize those compounding errors, the Robinson site has used Cat® MineStar™ System since 2007.
